Opposition Leader Says Dean Barrow’s Signature Accomplishments Breaking Apart

John Briceño

This afternoon, Opposition Leader John Briceño said that his party is reaching out to all affected families in order to provide some sort of assistance to get them back on their feet.  Commenting on the flash floods, which compromised the structural integrity of a portion of the George Price Highway, Briceño told News Five that over the years, the Barrow administration has spent more than two billion dollars on infrastructure. He says that hundreds of millions of dollars were spent on highways with contracts given to known U.D.P. supporters.

John Briceño, Leader of the Opposition

“It is so ironic that the Prime Minister’s hallmark or signature accomplishment has been the work that they have been doing with infrastructure. When you look at the amount of monies that they have spent in infrastructure it is over two billion dollars that they have spent. They have spent hundreds of millions of dollars on highways. And in many instances they have been given to people with dubious records that records that we simply did not trust. Now with the first heavy rains that we are getting Western Highway is washed in two different areas, the Southern Highway is washed. Basically, Belmopan, the capital has become isolated from the rest of country. Imagine, hundreds of hundreds of millions of dollars have been spent and first rains and all over the country we are seeing flooding, highways are being washed away.”

“Do you know who got the contract for that portion of the highway?”

John Briceño

“I know, certainly the one from Belmopan to Cayo, in that area I know that Imer Hernandez has that portion and also over the years I think Imer Hernandez and I think Denny Grijalva had some work on the George Price Highway from Belmopan to Belize City. So these are the people who have been getting all the work from the government.”
