NEMO & Village Council Sound Off on Bella Vista Flooding!

Back to the flooding…another community further south also experienced heavy flooding. Reports coming out Bella Vista on the Southern Highway are that several homes began to experience flooding as early as two in the morning. The village reportedly experienced heavy rainfall all of Wednesday and all through-out the night. About thirty seven families have been affected by the floods, but NEMO says a closer look at the number shows about nine to a dozen were impacted, but they have all sought shelter with other family members in the village. Today, as we spoke with Chairperson Onedia Hernandez, she says that she didn’t like the way NEMO was operating – pointing out that NEMO was playing politics, while conducting emergency work. Kenton Parham, who is the District Coordinator for NEMO, says that is not so.

On the Phone: Oneida Hernandez, Chairlady, Bella Vista

“This morning Bella Vista we had a lot of places that get flooded. We had some of the houses that the water come inside and I think we had three inches in some houses; four inches and five inches in some other houses. We were trying to do a survey and trying to help people this morning, along with the village council. We called NEMO and Mr. Kenton Parham said he would come and assist and he came to Bella Vista around twelve o’clock. Now, I didn’t know that NEMO is political. Now that they take this politically, I just move away with my village council. We are so disappointed.”

“We are out in Bella Vista trying to do an assessment of those homes. We have the relief supplies committee to try and make it out here to do that assessment. I can tell you that the water has been receding. The persons who were affected didn’t have to move to shelters and were placed with other family members by the chairlady Miss Onieda Hernandez who has been working with them since early morning as well and doing a good job.”

“We spoke with Ms. Oneida a short while ago and she expressed to us some disappointment in the way NEMO is handling matters there. She said that she collected information and that information was handed over to some political operative. How do you respond to that?”

On the Phone: Kenton Parham

“Well, definitely not. NEMO is a professional agency and we work with anybody that shows up to lend a helping hand. We definitely didn’t turn over any list or anything like that. In fact I have that in my possession right here; whether you are red, blue, green, catholic – disaster doesn’t differentiate. One person did show up to render assistance with a vehicle. He has a high vehicle and we wanted to take advantage of that to access some of the areas to the back. We are thinking if we split up we could get the work done quicker. When that person showed up then the chairlady took issue with that.”
