Day two yields more guns, grenades

Story Picture
Day two of the Cash For Guns programme has taken some new weapons off the street including an undisclosed number of hand grenades. The British manufactured grenades were part of the day’s haul, which ranged from pen guns to M-16 ammo clips. Project coordinator Nuri Muhammed told News Five that by this evening he had already paid out over five thousand for illegal guns and ammunition.

“Today’s catch has been close to over twenty weapons including grenades, a number of ammunition, which includes a clip completely loaded for a sixteen millimetre. We also had a number of pen guns that came in and the flow continues. The catch, I said sixteen millimetre, but I meant M-16 was an important catch. These are obvious BDF weapons, but we’ve also had a good flow of the youths coming in and bringing the weapons. We want to appeal to those who view this broadcast to continue to bring in the weapons. It’s getting the weapons off the street. We are attempting to not completely solve the problem here, but to make a dent in getting the weapons off the street and having the public feel much more safe.”

Muhammed says they have changed the opening hours of the centre on Elston Kerr Street because people have been attempting to exchange guns for cash at night. The new opening hours are from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Meanwhile, as of Monday evening the following companies had contributed money to the project: James Brodies and Company Limited, Augusto Quan Limited, Barrow and Williams, Appliance World Limited, Bank of Nova Scotia, Southside Mini Mart, Glenn D. Godfrey and Company, and Atlantic Insurance Corporation.
