A Call for Nominations for Ocean Heroes

Are you the next Ocean Hero? OCEANA Belize wants you to apply today! The call for submission for the annual Ocean Hero Award is now open. The award recognizes those who champion the protection of our oceans through research, education, restoration and other ocean-related sustainable projects. The deadline for the submission of nominations is on July thirty-first. Communications Director Alyssa Carnegie of OCEANA Belize tells us more about Ocean Hero 2020.

“The award is open to individuals throughout Belize with interest in the oceans including education; teaching; on the ground conservation; restoration and rehabilitation work and even research.  Our Ocean Hero Award winners, the past ones, have all done amazing things. They didn’t start at that level. They all come from very humble and ordinary beginnings. But the impact could either be local and national in scope. So, that is the same for this year in terms of a requirement. So, if you are thinking nominating someone including yourself, just be mindful that the impact can be local or national in scope. We do welcome the submission of nominees of all ages, although the individual nominating an Ocean Hero must be thirteen years of age or older. So you can nominate somebody that is younger than thirteen but the person doing the nomination must be thirteen years and older.   It is really important especially the kind of uncertain times we are living in right now to recognize the work that people are doing and that there are people among us who are examples for young people to follow.  So, for us it is very important to recognize this individual commitment as people aren’t getting paid to do this. These people are doing this because of their love and commitment to country. That is awesome and something that should be recognized.”
