Set U.D.P. Leadership Convention Set for July 18th?

In political news, there is word tonight that at its sitting today, Cabinet discussed the matter of the U.D.P. leadership. As you know, in February, John Saldivar was elected as leader designate but had to step down in a matter of three days due to the Lev Dermen scandal.  He along with his nemesis Patrick Faber have placed their names for another bid and so have Ministers Wilfred “Sedi’’ Elrington, Omar Figueroa and former Belize City Mayor Darrell Bradley. But COVID-19 threw a spanner in the plans for a new U.D.P. leadership convention. General elections are due by November, so the U.D.P. will have to elect a new leader to succeed PM Dean Barrow who has planned that his successor would take the reins and finish off the current U.D.P. term. Today, Saldivar set out a message to delegates saying that a possible date for the convention is on July eighteenth. According to Saldivar, all who have been applied to run will be allowed to run if they choose. He reminds that he is offering to resume the post of Leader as it is now clear that he has done nothing wrong. Saldivar tells delegates that he hopes those who voted for him will do so again and that the ideas he has shared during the pandemic show that he has the ability to lead the U.D.P.  Saldivar also shares that transfers are from July first to August thirty-first and says that the latest possible date for elections is November fourth. Saldivar’s name was embroiled in a case that went before the US courts for money laundering. The accused, Lev Dermen, was found guilty. Text messages showed that Saldivar was getting twenty-five thousand U.S. dollars in monthly tranches from Dermen through Jacob Kingston. Saldivar said the money was campaign contributions.
