Celebrating Fisherfolks in June

Deseree Arzu

The lives of fisherfolks are usually celebrated with several events throughout the year, but because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Fisherfolk Planning Committee was forced to scale down its activities. Several activities have been planned to celebrate the fishermen and women of Belize. Communications Coordinator for Wildlife Conservation Society, Deseree Arzu says that the month is aimed at recognizing fishers throughout the country, especially those who have continuously practiced sustainable fishing and are a role model for the industry. The theme this year is “maximizing fisheries value chains, the core of the blue economy.”

“We appeared on Open Your Eyes on the first of June to talk about what are some of the challenges that fishers are facing regionally and some of the alternative livelihoods that they are involved in in Belize. We currently have a call for nominations for Fisher of the Year. Sp what we are asking the public to do is to submit their letter. It is a condense month of activities because we usually have as well Women in Fisheries Forum which we started along with MCAP a couple of years back. We do plan to still have that forum for the women but later on the year. This year’s theme is “maximizing fisheries value chains, the core of the blue economy. As you know the blue economy is a back talk. We also use the barrier reef especially for Belize for entertainment. It is a big economic thing. Right now the tourism industry has crashed but we still have fishers going out there. It is part of their livelihood. We have people who go for sports fishing. It is a very important theme this year.”
