Opposition Leader Calls for Land Reform

John Briceño

Still on the matter of lands, activist Nigel Petillo is calling on the government to issue lands to Belizeans who possess none.  Last week, Petillo invited prospective land owners to an area he has identified on the George Price Highway. But squatting is illegal.  Opposition Leader John Briceño, who was once the Minister of Natural Resources, says that there is an urgent need for land reform so that every Belizean from any walk of life can own a piece of the Jewel.

John Briceño, Leader of the Opposition

“The issue of squatting has always been there, but it has never been a major issue when we were in government. It did not reach to a point of crisis as we are right now. This is a direct indication that the U.D.P. government has failed the Belizean people in making land available to those that need. When I was there, when I was the Minister of Natural Resources, about nine and half years, I issued over sixty five thousands titles to Belizeans from all walks of life, from all across the country. So we did not feel that real pressure that we have. What is it that we plan to do or do differently? I think that we need to look at the issue of land reform. That yes we do agree that there are a lot of people that have a lot of land that they are not putting it to use and that we need to take a comprehensive inventory of the land that is available.”
