U.S. National Murdered inside his Bedroom; the Ex of His Common-law Wife is Detained

Robert Hurley

A U.S. national was murdered in the bedroom of his house on the Benque Viejo del Carmen Road on Tuesday night. The man detained in the bizarre murder is the ex of Robert Hurley’s common-law-wife. He is David Valencia, who police say was employed by Hurley and is now in police custody. Hurley and twenty-seven-year-old Sheldeen Evans were at home when Valencia walked into the room and knifed the sixty-year-old man. She ran to the neighbours for help, but Hurley soon expired. Valencia was detained in a bus this morning; he was travelling with the nine-year-old daughter he shares with Evans. News Five’s Duane Moody reports.

U.S. national Robert Hurley, who has been living in Belize for decades, was knifed to death overnight inside his bedroom. He was at home with his common-law wife, Sheldeen Evans when her ex-common-law husband, David Valencia entered the bedroom and stabbed Hurley multiple times. Evans was also stabbed to the back during the incident. Completely nude, she ran, a good distance away, to the neighbour’s house for help.

“I had a knock on my window and when I peeped, it was the young girl and she said, “Miss, Miss, please call the police? Please call the police? They just killed Mister Robert Hurley.” I said, “What?” I get so jumpy, I neva know what fi do; it ketch me off guarded, I mi di sleep and I wake up my husband and tell ahn, “Bwai get up! Robert gial deh out deh. Ih say dehn just kill ahn; dehn stab ahn ih say.” Oh my God, my husband get up and when I do…cause she was naked; naked when I peep from the window. So I try to find something to give she, but when I do come outside, she mi done lef already. Then my husband come down and I call police. I was so nervous I couldn’t find the San Ignacio Police number so I called Benque Police and Benque police called San Ignacio.”

The property is located off the highway, several hundred yards on a beaten path used as the entrance near mile sixty-eight. Police quickly responded, but by then, Hurley was dead. He was found nude, lying face up on the bed. Valencia was nowhere to be found.

Supt. Henry Jemmott, O.C., San Ignacio Police Formation

“Initial reports into the matter reveal that Robert Hurley is the resident of the house and his common-law at the time, Miss Sheldeen Evans were socializing in the house. Also present downstairs was her ex-common-law which is one Mister David Alex Valencia.   Sometime around 10, 10:30, he made his way upstairs where he attacked Mister Hurley. Seeing this, the common-law tried to intervene where she sustained a cut wound as well. After which he inflicted the wounds and made good his escape from the location.”

Also sleeping inside the house were Evans’ two daughters, including a nine-year-old she shares with Valencia. Checks made revealed that Valencia escaped with the girl. They were later found onboard a passenger bus travelling from Benque to San Ignacio, which the police had intercepted. Valencia is now in police custody.

David Valencia

Supt. Henry Jemmott

“He took along with him one of his nine year old daughters while he was leaving. Police went into the area, we processed the scene, did further searches of the area and we maintained police vigilance within that area until daybreak. Sometime around 5:30, 6:00, we were checking the buses and we then checked one of the bus and found to the rear of the bus Mister David and his daughter inside the bus. He was then detained pending investigation of a stabbing incident and also murder.”

After nine o’clock this morning, the suspected murder weapon, a twelve-inch blade, was discovered in bushes on the other side of the highway, across from the entrance to Hurley’s property. That too has been taken into evidence and as News Five understands, Valencia has opted to provide a caution statement to the police.

Neighbour, Deborah Segura says that the incident has left them in a state of shock because Hurley was not caught up in problems.

“They’ve been together long?”

Deborah Segura

“Well I know they were going out. I noh know if she mi di live with he. I used to see she now and then. And how I see she, when I di go dah town, I see she di go there or I see she di come out. That’s it.”

But according to police, the investigation so far is suggesting that the incident may have been motivated by jealousy. Superintendent Jemmott says that Valencia, was working for Hurley as a handyman on the property.

Supt. Henry Jemmott

“From what we are looking at, we think that the motive might be jealousy; more than likely it is jealousy that we are looking at. And maybe the female might have still had a relationship with both men. It is in the infant stage, but we are trying to get all the information out because of the close relation of the person.”
