ComPol Visits Border Villages in the West!

Three weeks ago we took you to the border village of Arenal in the west. Because half of the village is in Belize and the other half lies in Guatemala, the people move back and forth freely. But during a time of pandemic it is of big concern and there is still movement of Guatemalans entering illegally. Well, the illegal entry is just a part of the problem, as villagers there say that contraband is on the move despite COVID-19 concerns. Well, today, according to the Belize Police Department’s Facebook Page, the Commissioner of Police, along with several commanding and senior officers made a stop in at Arenal, and also visited Calla Creek, Succotz and Bullet Tree. The post reads, ComPol Williams and the Senior Officers visited suspected illegal crossings, visited communities members and made strategic changes to address illegal crossings that can stop the spread of the COVID-19 in our country.” But even prior to the ComPol’s visit, one resident in that community recorded this video appealing for the authorities to curb the contraband to reduce the risk of exposure to COVID-19. Here’s how he explains what’s been happening.

Concerned Resident, Arenal Village

“Morning Belize, this is the road where they cross the contraband with cows. We need to stop this together and that is why I make this report to officer Chester Williams and that is why we come to close the road with a tree. It’s because we don’t want the people from Guatemala continue pass to Belize. This is the border line right here. This land dah fuh me but I don’t want anybody to cross. So, that’s why I am sending this video to do something. Send help to Arenal because lotta contraband di pass yah. They go to Cayo; pass in Succotz and dah Arenal but I don’t know how. Because we have police deh and police nuh stop nothing and nuh do nothing for the people. We need to stop this because lotta people from Guatemala come in yah and we nuh wah get infected again.   That’s why we ask you. I need your help because too much thing the pass back yah. We need the soldiers to come yah. See, we done try to close the road.”
