P.E. in Living Room is for the Kids

The National Sports Council has gotten creative and is using the media to reach out to children who are stuck at home during the state of emergency.  It’s called P.E. in the living room and various well-known athletes from across the country are hosting videos that teach children physical education by engaging in fun activities such as dancing.  This afternoon, Director Ian Jones unveiled the segment which will be aired on local television.

“Ever since the closure of the primary schools all our kids have been at home and for the most part they’ve not been active.  I mean we’ve been under a full lockdown for most of this time and even in the SI’s past, you weren’t allowed to exercise or workout beyond a certain time and we, after watching, and I actually got the idea from watching DJ Dalla’s virtual segment that he did and I said, you know what, that’s a really good idea, really thinking outside of the box type of scenario.  So I got along with my head sports coordinators and I said why don’t we do something like this for PE?  Why don’t we do this and create a virtual PE segment that kids would be able to follow and parents as well would be able to participate along with their kids and the idea is to stay healthy, stay fit.”

“Each district has their own segment and we try to make it as fun as possible and it’s not always the same thing, for example, in Dangriga we did a segment doing jankunu, teaching kids the basic steps how to learn jankunu.  In Belmopan, we did a dance video, so it’s basically instructors doing different dances and putting it together all in one to come up with a dance at the end.  So kids can sit in their living rooms or stand in front of their TV and follow the instructions that are being shown.”
