Valley of Peace Farmers Take Triple Hit; Need Urgent Help!

The farmers are reeling right now from the losses as a result of the floods – but this loss cuts deeper, according to President of the Valley of Peace Farmers Association. He points out that this is a triple whammy for the farmers – as the drought conditions have been wreaking havoc on their crops and following that, the COVID-19 situation also left a lot of products on their hands that they couldn’t sell. Now, he says they are in desperate need of help.

Ever Blandon, President, Valley of Peace Farmers Association

“It is a big impact. We started with COVID-19 and so when that started, we had extra production of vegetables and then the drought was also a big threat to us and this flooding I think end with it.”

Andrea Polanco

“So, it is an incredibly hard time for the farmers?”

Ever Blandon

“Yes. I will say that this industry, without the help of the government it would collapse because it is hard to start over without a help.”

Andrea Polanco

“What are some of the concerns that the farmers have been sharing with you, considering you have the drought, the COVID-19 and now the flooding?”

Ever Blandon

“Well, yes, most of them are calling on how the association can assist them with seeds and how they can start over but at this point the association is not in the position to help them. So, we are just waiting on the government right now to assist us.”

Andrea Polanco

“So, the urgent needs of the farmers right now are what – mostly for seedlings?”

Ever Blandon

“I would say just seedlings and inputs like fertilizers, fungicide, bactericide so that they can start over. That is the way the Ministry has been working in the past in that they would assist us with seeds and fertilizers.”
