Elderly Man Shot During Home Invasion in Ladyville

Dodlie Estelle

An elderly man was shot to the back during a robbery at his hotel in Ladyville. Eighty-seven-year-old Dodlie Estelle was at home with his common-law when armed robbers came into his house, demanding money and the location of a safe on Wednesday evening. They did not find the safe, but shot Estelle on the back and robbed him of five hundred U.S. dollars in his pocket. The couple was left traumatized at the near death ordeal. Here is News Five’s Duane Moody with a report.

Duane Moody, Reporting

A well-known elderly man from Ladyville and his common-law were the victims of a home invasion on Wednesday evening. Around five p.m., eighty-seven-year-old Dodlie Estelle, the proprietor of Estelle’s Airport Hotel next door to Celina’s, was on the second floor of the building where he lives. Three men, one of them armed with a gun, accosted him and his common-law and another waited in a parked Ford Explorer SUV outside.

Yvette Halliday, Daughter of Shooting Victim

“It was real frightening. Yo always heat this happening on the news and you never think that one day it would come knocking on your door. I was at home; my sister called me and said yo know they had a home invasion and daddy has been shot. And so I just jumped up, came out to my dad. My other sisters were here; they brought him downstairs and took him to the hospital and there they confirmed indeed that he was shot. Luckily he is stable; the bullet is still inside of him, but there was no internal injuries. Praise God for that.”

The thieves carried out the crime with precision and the family believes that it was a set-up because they came asking for money and specifically the location of a safe on the property.

Yvette Halliday

“What I gathered from my dad; there were three persons indeed who came up. They had a vehicle, a blue Ford Explorer, and they had a driver inside. But only three people indeed went up to where my dad and his partner were located.”

“They were demanding money.”

Yvette Halliday

“They came specific for money. They were asking for the chest; they want the chest. The girl told them that we don’t have any chest and they insisted that they wanted the money. They pushed her down; she is a bit handicap so they had to hold her head down. My dad put up a good fight with them; he was on the floor kicking and stuff, so they held him down and then they shot him.”

Duane Moody

“These persons, from what we understand they are all from Belize City, seem to have intel on your dad and how he saves his money. You think it was a hit; that these persons monitored your father?”

Yvette Halliday

“Honestly, the vibes I have been picking up is that indeed they had information. We have an idea who it is that probably gave them information. But you know, amidst this, God is good and we will take it to the Lord in prayer and let the Lord deal with them because he said vengeance is mine and so we will leave it at that.”

Estelle was robbed of five hundred U.S. dollars, but before they fled the scene, the gunman fired a shot, which caught the elderly man on the back. Estelle was rushed to the hospital where he was treated and today provided statements to the police investigators on the horrific ordeal.

Yvette Halliday

“Praise God he is doing pretty good. He has a little bit back pain, but he is alert, he is talking. He is currently giving a statement to the police so he is doing pretty good; thank God for that.”

Duane Moody

“These things often times make us rethink how we process and look at our security. Talk to us about that. What kinda security measures are you guys going to put in place because there are a lot of people who are tenants here?”

Yvette Halliday

“We have a gate and I guess we probably have to keep the gate lock and everybody who comes, if you are not certain then we don’t let them in and dial 911 and call the police and let the police come and move them if you are not certain. Because the Bible tells you, the enemy is in your household so we just can’t trust anyone right now.”

The four culprits escaped via the Boom/Hattieville Circuit in a Ford Explorer SUV, which was intercepted by Hattieville police. The suspects, who are from Curl Thompson and Ordonez Streets in Belize City, are now in police custody and it is expected that charges will be levied shortly. Duane Moody for News Five.
