Football Activity Also Affected by COVID-19

General Secretary Earl Jones of the Football Federation of Belize says that COVID-19 has caused the football industry to crash. No money is coming in and the way forward for the sport is difficult to predict, despite plans to restart in July.

On the Phone: Earl Jones, General Secretary, F.F.B.

“COVID-19 has caused a collapse in the whole football activity. In fact, the clubs were dependent on media rights, advertising and other things to sustain themselves because it is not cheap to run a professional club at that level. It has collapsed because no money is coming in all around. The way forward now will be even more difficult to get back underway because we are looking at starting back up in July, which we still have to sit down and look at because from there onwards. How do we start?  What protocols do we put into place? Can we sustain these protocols? Do we have the funding to play games without fans? I would say no. we don’t have that strong media to sell media rights contracts. Most of the clubs don’t have that amount of contracts to really sustain themselves; they need the gate, they need the fans, they need all that they can get to sustain the club. So it will be very difficult to restart to rebuild back that league again, like it would be with all the other levels of football. Nevertheless, we are working diligently on it to have guidelines in place and looking at different ways of getting media and other agencies involved in advertising rights. We are looking at all these things to how we can increase their revenue.”
