Olympics begin Friday; Belize roots for Marion

Story Picture
In related media news that was supposed to dominate the week’s headlines, the Olympic Games begin tomorrow in Australia. Belize, with more officials than athletes, will not be a factor in Sydney, but that deficiency is more than balanced by the presence of Marion Jones. Jones, the world’s fastest woman, has a shot at winning a record five gold medals for the USA. She also has a Belizean mother, which automatically gives her two hundred and fifty thousand cousins, who will be cheering her down the track. Because of the time difference between Australia and Belize most of the Olympic action will take place while we are sleeping. For those viewers who are insomniacs or true sport fans, Channel Five will air most events live. Our coverage begins tonight, or rather Friday morning at 12:30 with a Caribbean Olympic special, followed by the Olympic opening ceremony at 1:45 a.m. Our live coverage, utilizing the signal of the Canadian Broadcast Corporation, will be supplemented by a Caribbean highlights package each morning and evening. Traditional prime time Olympic coverage by the US networks will be offered by the nation’s cable television operators.
