Children rally for independence

Story Picture
Every year at this time Belize’s school children get a chance to have their own special celebration. This morning I was on hand as the city’s students traded their chairs and desks for bleachers and wide open spaces.

Jacqueline Woods, Reporting

Thousands of Belize City Primary School students filled the bleachers inside the City Centre to celebrate Belize’s Independence in the annual Children’s Rally.

Faye Perriott Gillett, Coordinator, Children’s Rally

“This type of rally is to get children to think about their roots, to think about patriotism and what part patriotism play in their lives. So it is to try and get them to be more cognizant of what patriotism is.”

The half-day event was filled with entertainment provided largely by the children themselves.

“We have different schools participating, children are giving different items like dances and skits and we also had schools giving the vote of thanks, the welcome address. All schools participating in different items, all Belize City schools.”

But the biggest treat of the day had to be when the children were sent home on holiday for the remainder of the day.

While it was the Belize City students who attended today’s rally, on Friday, the boys and girls from Belize rural schools will have their day of celebration in their own communities.
