Story Picture
For the next two weeks the world sporting spotlight may shine on Sydney, Australia, but for an energetic group of Belizeans the gold lies not down under, but over yonder.

Since the past three weeks, the first National Female Football Team has been practicing for their upcoming quadrangular match in Campeche, Mexico. The tournament, which gets underway on Friday, is part of that country’s independence celebrations. Although the selection team is new the women have been playing football in their respective districts and say they are ready for the international competition.

“How are you looking forward to the game?”

Christine Avila

“We want to win and everybody is ready. We all are hyped up and ready to go and play right now bring back whatever they have to give us and make Belize proud of us and we hope they look forward to female football.”

Helen Flowers, National Female Football Team

“The strong points are basically the dedication of the players you know. The majority of the players are those who have played before, so you know it is just a matter of getting together and working together as a team for the country.”

“Do you think we stand a good chance at winning?”

Helen Flowers

“Well we do. We are dedicated to that, so we’ll go out there and play our best.”

Head Coach, Kent Gabourel says that after examining the talent available, they picked 18 of the best players to represent Belize.

“We all ask the different coaches from the districts to send their better players and we got together and worked out in Belmopan on weekends for four weekends and we had 20 players and we just watched players that had a little bit of skills and condition and also discipline and we also put a lot together and we took the best and we are taking them to Campeche for this tournament.”

“I for one think that we will do very good in Campeche. I took a team in Guatemala the other day and I won a tournament and I know that in Central America female football is not all that high and I think we can win the tournament if we go out and play our heart and soul.”

The team left the country early this afternoon. Belize will be playing on Friday and then on Sunday before returning home on Monday.
