Body of Missing Maskall Resident is Found in Shallow Grave

Benjamin Reid

A Maskall man, who went missing on May thirteenth, is believed to have been the victim of a heinous murder.  Benjamin Reid was freed for the shooting death of Daniel Guardado in March.  Two months later, he appeared in court and was last seen alive on Ross Penn Road. While his family had suspected things had gone wrong for Reid, on Sunday night their fears were confirmed. Police believe that a body found in a shallow grave near mile four on the George Price Highway is that of Reid. Here is News Five’s Duane Moody with a report.

Police believe that the victim of a murder is missing man, twenty-three-year-old Benjamin Reid from Maskall Village. On Sunday, a gruesome discovery was made; the decomposing body of a man, clothed in a long blue denim pants, a white long sleeve buttoned-down shirt, a blue face mask and a Reebok tennis, was found in a shallow grave. About six foot nine inches in height, the victim was shot to the head and buried several yards behind a bar off mile four on the George Price Highway.

“From yesterday, police received the information about a shallow grave behind Tapir Bar and Deck in a bushy area. Police checked it last night and indeed they found human remains there, but because of the weather, it was left there until this morning. So this morning, sometime after eight in the morning, police along with scenes of crime and forensic examiner proceeded to the location where the body was exhumed and a post mortem was conducted on site. The body is that of a male person. The person was wearing at the time either a beige or grey in color Reebok tennis. He was wearing a long blue jeans pants and a white button-up shirt, long sleeve. Also the person had two silver chain; a thick one and a thin one.”

It is believed that the body is that of Benjamin Reid who was charged for the 2018 shooting death of Daniel Guardado. Earlier this year, on March twenty-sixth, the charge was dropped when the crown counsel was forced to enter a nolle pros against him. Reid disappeared from Ross Penn Road when he was last seen alive, after a court appearance in Belize City on May thirteenth. A missing person’s report was made back then. And on Sunday night, due to the state of decomposition, the time of death could not be ascertained, but it is believed that Reid was killed on the day he went missing.

Supt. Alejandro Cowo

“We have not received the exact information from the forensic examiner until he sends it to us.  Then I can tell you more or less if that person has been there for a month or more than a month or less than a month.”

“Any identification was found on the…”

Supt. Alejandro Cowo

“None.”

Duane Moody

“Was there anything to suggest foul play?”

Supt. Alejandro Cowo

“Yes the doctor certified that the person died of gunshot injuries to the body, to the head.”

Back in 2019, the police installed checkpoints where all occupants of vehicles would be interviewed as a crime prevention tool.

Supt. Alejandro Cowo

“The checkpoint has been there for a good while. I believe that this person was maybe moved from the city to that location. They did not reach the actual checkpoint at the four mile where the coastguard base is related, around that area.”
