The Borders are NOT Open!

While the measures continue to be scaled down and the economy continues to open up slowly, don’t expect social distancing and face masks to go away so quickly.  Those remain in place up until the end of this month and will very likely be extended as the national oversight committee sees fit.  Attorney General Michael Peyrefitte explains that the border points also remain closed and outlines what those Belizeans who want to enter the country must do.

“We want to say that certain things remain in place. Social distancing continues. If you can work from home, work from home. Wear your masks at all times. People are still being arrested for not having a mask when they come out and it will continue to be that way until the end of the state of emergency at the end of June and possibly even beyond that.   We like to remind people that the borders are still close. Despite some stupid person putting out some notes about what is happening – that is not the case. The borders remain closed and there is no announcement that the airport will open July first. That has not yet been determined and the borders in the west and the north of the country, those are not open except for cargo and movement of essential goods from country to country. You cannot just pull up at the border even if you are a Belizean and demand to cross without any notice. Nevertheless, if you are a Belizean or a permanent resident you are allowed, along with, if for example a resident Belizean diplomat or a foreign diplomat, you can enter the country once you have notified the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Ministry would then give a pre-approval for you to enter and the immigration department has to say that yes you have a right to enter Belize whether you are a diplomat or citizen or resident. The Ministry of Health then has to determine what steps has to be taken with you in terms of making sure that you are properly quarantine whether at home or in an official facility and then the ministry of national security gives the final sign off to say this is where you will be, this is how long you are being told to be in quarantine and then we go ahead and enforce the law.”
