What About Cruise Lines’ Employees?

Belizeans students who are stuck in other countries due to COVID-19 are encouraged to write to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs if they want to return home. While borders remain close, plans are being worked out for students to make their way back to the country. Those students, however, will have to pay for the cost of their quarantine. As for Belizeans working for cruise lines, such as Royal Caribbean and Carnival, Prime Minister Dean Barrow says that the CARICOM General Council concluded that it is the responsibility of cruise lines to pay the quarantine costs for any Caribbean nationals that they can succeed in repatriating.

“I think it was Carnival that said they would hope that the government can excuse them, bearing that burden for the quarantining of the crew members. But a similar response from Royal Caribbean Cruise Line. Remember that insofar that I know Norwegian up to this point in time has not even asked. But what is important in the context of your particular question and this discussion is the following: CARICOM had a meeting I think on Monday or Tuesday and the CARIMCOM position is that in fact several preconditions would have to obtain before Caribbean Governments ought to have accept repatriation of Caribbean nationals that currently crew members of the cruise lines.”
