Barrow to Borrow to the Very Last for Salaries

Dean Barrow

Back to the issue of the public service. In this morning’s press conference, Prime Minister Barrow pledged that he will borrow until the very last to ensure that their substantial salaries are met and committed that there will not be retrenchment. Today, Opposition Leader John Briceño also responded to that proposition by referring to political cronyism.

Prime Minister Dean Barrow

“I will borrow until I can borrow no more.  But anybody must realize that moving on there can be no, as it were, absolutely fail-safe unalterable guarantee.  The Central Bank will not be able to print money until kingdom come and if there comes a time when there is simply no more money then we’ll have to examine the circumstances.  I will tell you that I do not see that happening at all, at all, at all.”

John Briceño, Leader of the Opposition

“The prime minister wants to have his cake and eat it. He says I am not going to fire anybody and I am just going to borrow. I think he said he is going to borrow and borrow and borrow until he can’t go anywhere. It is not just about borrowing and making salaries. It is about looking at his government; where the monies are being spent, where is it that we need to have cuts, where is it that we have people that are there only because they are political cronies. That is where; we need to cut the fat and get to the real deal that we need to be able to run government as sustainably as possible.”
