23 Persons Die of COVID-19 in Quintana Roo

Neighbouring countries in the north and west, Mexico and Guatemala, are recording an increase of COVID-19 cases. With Belizeans illegally crossing the border, the possibility of a more lethal second wave is looking like a real possibility. Guatemala has recorded seven hundred and thirty cases with forty-six cases in the Peten region.  In the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico, twenty-three persons died due to COVID-19 within twenty-four hours. Mexico has recorded close to one thousand positive cases and one hundred and forty-four deaths. Doctor Marvin Manzanero says that officials here are monitoring the situations in bordering countries.

Dr. Marvin Manzanero, Director of Health Services

“We can shy away from the fact and in the infographic data that we publish in our social media that our three neighbours, or four immediate neighbours if you will, Honduras, Guatemala, Mexico and the US are having increasing numbers of cases, increasing mortality rates and they are not expected to peak in the next two to three weeks. Peak means the highest number in a given time period and it does not mean that it is going to go away. As long as you have those cases brewing with your neighbours we are not in the clear at all.”

“I believe in the state of Quintana Roo Mexico twenty three persons passed due to COVID-19 in the last twenty four hours. That is alarming. Are you and your experts monitoring that situation in the north?”

Dr. Marvin Manzanero

“Yes, Cancun and the Playa del Carmen area are the ones that are having increasing numbers. The Othon P. Blanco, which is where Chetumal is in, reported that at midday, a total of twenty four cases. They have more cases now that we have. You can’t assume things that are far away.”
