COVID-19 Here to Stay; What Happens When Flu Season Comes Around?

Marvin Manzanero

DHS Doctor Marvin Manzanero, during this morning COVID-19 update on Open Your Eyes, said that this is only the first outbreak in Belize, which the government was able to control. While he was careful not to create panic, he says that the Ministry of Health is concerned about a possible flare up during the flu season later this year.

Dr. Marvin Manzanero, Director of Health Services

“In order for us to determine that this current outbreak and I have to be very clear as to when I say this outbreak, the current eighteen cases. We will have to go two more weeks before we can consider—and that might change—but the science right now, two more weeks to make it to a total of twenty-eight days without a case before you can consider this outbreak seems to have been over. And I say this outbreak because eventually you can have another wave because it is not going to go away. There is talk last week with colleagues to think that COVID-19 could potentially be a seasonal one so that you can have Caribbean countries at a higher number towards the end of the calendar year because that’s when the flu season routinely picks up—that’s October to December. So you have to prepare your health system for that eventually.”
