Westline Layoffs Personnel Due to COVID-19

COVID-19 has the Belize economy in a chokehold and while the government struggles to breathe, a long list of businesses countrywide are forced to shut down and lay off employees. The transportation industry has been hit hard.  Bus operator, Westline, in a memo dated April twenty-fourth informed its staff of layoffs due to redundancy and the State of Emergency. The memo informs the staff that ninety percent will be laid off as Westline seeks to reduce operational costs and pay outstanding debts. Westline also informs its employees that payoffs of any yearly outstanding vacation leave will not be possible at this time. The staff was being paid one hundred dollars per week for four weeks but the financial constraints were too much for the company. C.E.O. and General Manager, Usbaldo Castillo says that “there is no other alternative but to wait out the negative effects of this pandemic and hope for a new beginning.”
