Councilor Haresh Vaswani Charged for S.O.E. Violations

Haresh Vaswani

Orange Walk Town Councilor Haresh Vaswani and three other persons were arrested on Saturday for violating the State of Emergency regulations. According to Vaswani, he had just finished packaging food hampers to be donated and was on his way home at around five o clock in the evening when a friend offered him a ride. He accepted and it soon became a ride around town with two other persons. And that led to an encounter with police officers who stopped the men for going contrary to traffic. Vaswani detailed what happened.

Haresh Vaswani, Councilor, Orange Walk Town Council

“Coming towards my home he said, let us go for a little circle. Let us put in a little bit of gas at Shell. So we turned. We went to Shell One Stop. He put some gas into his vehicle. So we drove off going towards Belize Corozal Road where a guy shouted, hey Haresh. So I turned around. We thought sometime happened. The guy went around the curve and he curve and he came back and he thought something happened. He told the guy what happened? He said, no I was only calling Haresh. So the guy parked the vehicle in front the vehicle by ZETA Autoparts and the guy that lives there was speaking to us for about fifteen minutes. I told him that I am going home. I just came for a circle because he wanted to speak with me on some issues that he had, and he wanted my advice. So we spoke and then I said that he would drop me home and I don’t want to be late because it is curfew at eight. Then the guy said if you guys are going that way do you guys mind if I join. No because we are going home. The driver said okay then everybody wants to take a little spin let’s go for ten minutes. I said okay fine. All of us agreed. The guy jumped in the vehicle. We went for a little circle. We went by Baker’s Street. We went by the riverside to see if everything was oaky. We didn’t stop. We went by Main Street. Up the hill by Banquitas. We went by Otro Benque. We went for a little circle by Otro Benque Park. A lot of people were outside. We went by the park in the back where people were still out there by I mean they had a distance. So right at the park we were speaking. We didn’t come out of the vehicle. We spoke there for about five minutes. We went to Uno Gas Station in Trial Farm. The guy, we said let’s buy a soft drink. Let’s buy a coke. We bought a big coke. Let us share the coke. We bought four cups and we put the ice and we drank the coke.”

According to Councilor Vaswani, as they were headed home the driver of the vehicle took a left turn contrary to traffic. A police mobile spotted them and pulled the men over. An exchange between the driver and one of the officers landed the councilor and other passengers in a cell block.

“The guy said okay guys you did an offence you came through no entry. Therefore I will give the driver a ticket then you guys can go home. I said “Yes sir, sorry for everything that was caused.” The driver made a mistake. I cannot read his mind. Then after ten minutes speaking to the driver. We were on this side, the driver was on that side, speaking to the driver something happened. Ten minutes afterwards the police said you know what nobody move, get in the truck, all of us are going to the station. Sir, we didn’t do anything wrong. Even the passengers? Yes all of you are going because the driver talk too much. I said sir, one ticket and we go home.  It was a mistake. He did an offence. You are ticketing him and we do home. No. Station. Going to the station I didn’t say anything. I was scared. All of us were scared. First time in a station. Sit down on the side. Go inside. We sat down. We got arrested, they took us from there to the station about five-twenty, five-thirty. They sent us back there in the cell for about two hours which was uncalled for. What can we do? We are humans. We obey the officers. When everything was done we got bail. They came to bail us home and I got home. There was no drugs involve. No accident involved. No partying going on. Nobody was acting out of the way. No trouble.”

Hipolito Novelo

“Yes councilor, but the Attorney General made it quite clear that if you have no reason to be out there you shouldn’t be out there. Yes you are saying that you left SP and you were heading home but you had no reason to go ahead and take a spin or a circle around turn.”

Haresh Vaswani

“I take that fault. I will be charge for that. I will speak to the judge regarding that. Sadly I regret it. I will apology to the people. That was my mistake and I willing to take my charges.”

The four men are scheduled to appear in court on May eight.
