Nigel Espat Recovers from COVID-19

Nigel Espat

He was COVID-19 patient number six and on Sunday, Cayo resident Nigel Espat became the sixth person to recover from the virus. Espat was able to breathe a sigh of relief after he received his second negative result on Sunday. Espat’s test resulted positive on April fifth and it is believed that he contracted the virus from the deceased Hubert Pipersburgh, a City Council employee, with whom he would travel to Belize City regularly. Espat did not require medication and remained in self-isolation at his Cayo residence. After almost a month of quarantine, Espat spoke to News Five on his recuperation.

“Certainly it is a big burden off the chest. It has been quite a worrisome, a stressful month and so to receive the news that I was officially recovered it certainly gives me a lot of relief.  I would say that about a week ago the vast majority of the symptoms went away I start feeling like almost completely back to normal. What has not come back as yet to a hundred percent is my sense of smell and taste. I had probably great improvement for a about a week and half. I have back about fifty percent and I have not seen any improvements from there since then. I don’t know if it is permanent damage from the virus. I am hoping not.  Perhaps the other fifty percent will come back in the court of time but I still have a little bit of trouble smelling and tasting.   It is a big relief because we have been in this house and yard for about a month now so it is nice to know that I can have the freedom to move around although given the State of Emergency that is still in place it has to be limited. But it is nicer than to be in mandatory quarantine.”
