Cpl. Eldon Arzu Vs Chester Williams, Again

Chester Williams

The Belize Police Association’s President, Corporal Eldon Arzu and Commissioner of Police Chester Williams are at it again. Arzu and Williams are said to have a strained relationship and have even battled in court over the legitimacy and legality of Arzu’s presidency. Arzu recently wrote to the minister, complaining that the ComPol has refused to place the association’s members as part of a committee to discuss the salary of police officers during this pandemic. Williams says that Corporal Arzu broke protocol and will be referred to the Professional Standards Branch.

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police

“I just got wind of that letter from the C.E.O.  Apparently Mr. Arzu indeed wrote a letter to the minister. I have not seen that letter and if the C.E.O. would have not told me about a few minutes ago I would not have known about that letter. Nonetheless the police department is a discipline organization. We have protocols by which we do things and for a corporal to write a letter to the minister without going through the commissioner if a breach of discipline and as soon as I get a hold of that letter tomorrow I will forward it to PSB for internal actions. I am not going to continue to have a fight, as a matter of fact I have never had a fight. Mr. Arzu needs to understand what is his rank and what is his role. If it is that Mr. Arzu who seemingly wants to be president for life would not give account of the account to the members then something is wrong. Looks like this is North Korea, you become president for life. It is a matter Mr. Arzu needs to know what his place is, what his role is and play that role. There is currently some negotiations with government and the different departments and unions in terms of looking at public servant salaries. I have designated Mr. Jones and Sergeant Jane Usher to represent the police department in those meetings. Ms Usher is going to represent the lower ranks and Mr. Jones is going to represent the senior officer rank and that is within he power or purview of the commissioner to decide who goes and represents the department in meetings of that nature and those are my nominees.”
