San Ignacio Police Officer Charged with Harm

Meanwhile, in San Ignacio, two police officers were held accountable for using excessive force on Gilbardo Velasquez. Velasquez was detained for breaching curfew regulations on April nineteenth.  A video of Velasquez limping out of the San Ignacio Police station was shared on social media which prompted Police Commissioner Chester Williams to direct the Professional Standard Branch to conduct an investigation. The investigation led to Corporal Melbourne Hill and Constable Derwin Garcia being charged for the crime of harm.

“There was one Gilbardo Velasquez who reported to the Professional Standard Branch in Belmopan that police on the nineteenth of April utilized certain force against him causing certain injuries. As a result of that information we conducted an investigation where we learnt that on Sunday sometime around one p.m. police were conducting patrol somewhere in the Hill View of Santa Elena when they came across Mr. Velasquez. He was stopped and he was questioned as to his movement on public roads. He then fled from the police, the police eventually caught him on San Pedro Street and was then taken to the police station for failing to provide reasons out of curfew. He was arraigned on Monday for those charges, he pleaded guilty and he was fined two thousand dollars. The investigation revealed nevertheless that the force utilized against Mr. Velasquez or the injuries caused on him were not justified. The commissioner directed that those officers were held accountable in accordance with the law and today two officers from the San Ignacio Police formation were jointly cheated with the crime of harm. Those officers are Melbourne Hill, corporal of police, and Derwin Garcia police constable.”
