Belize Remains on Schedule to Phase Out Plastics!

Doctor Percival Cho outlined that while the current state of emergency has caused a hold-up for some of the work needed to be done, Belize is still expected to meet the deadline set to complete the phase out.

Dr. Percival Cho, C.E.O., Ministry of Forestry, Fisheries, Environment & Sustainable Development

“In regards to challenges we face, yes the state of emergency has put some sort of restrictions on how quickly the DOE can move because everyone is sheltering at home at the moment. However, the permitting system that DOE has was made to be online so at the time up until April 15th they were able to process and deal with any permits that came in. In terms of enforcement, well as soon as we get out this state of emergency period the DOE would begin the process of doing its spot checks  and mobilization with the customs to ensure that during the state of emergency everything was as per laid out in the law and there was no importation.”

“So, we are still on schedule to meet the phase out target, right?”

Dr. Percival Cho

“Yes. As far as I know, the DOE had expressed some challenges in regards to effectively move along their implementation, on site checks and field work that they need to do because of the state of emergency. They have expressed some challenges but I haven’t heard any request or any suggestion that the timeline be extended. It is written in the law as is and any changes to the time line would have to be reflected again in law. So, it is not an easy thing to change the time line. So, as it is now it is now we are on schedule and the time line stays as I just outlined. In less than a year’s time the phase out should be completed.”
