138 Curfew Breakers over the Weekend!

Over one hundred persons breached the curfew law over the weekend but it did not include minors.  On Friday evening, the new curfew regulations for persons sixteen-years-old and younger came into effect. That new law states that these persons must be in their homes by four p.m. everyday and cannot be found in public alone or in the company of their parents. Well, the good news is that no minors broke the law since it came into effect. Today Commissioner Chester Williams shared more about the arrests made over the weekend.

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police

“Over the weekend, we had a total of one hundred and thirty-eight persons who were arrested for various offences related to the state of emergency regulations. We continue to see a number of persons out who should not be out, as well as persons who are out during the curfew hours. I just want to appeal to the Belizean people that what is it that we are doing here is for all of our safety and benefit. I also want to appeal to them again that if there is no need to be on the streets, please stay home. I think so far we are doing well and I hope that we can continue the trend on which we are where we are not seeing any new cases for the past almost a week. If we can continue this then hopefully pretty soon we will be out of this situation but again it requires the full cooperation of everybody.”

“What are the reasons people are providing for being out during this time?”

Chester Williams

“We see people out buying one soft drink; people out buying one Monster; people out buying fonto. It is just amazing what you see but people find every reason to be out on the streets and we cannot tolerate it. If you are out to buy soft drink or Monster, that is not a reason and we will send you back home. If you going to buy fonto we wah arrest you because obviously dah weed you going to smoke because we need to have good reasons to be out.”
