Social Distancing and other Precautionary Measures May Extend for More Than a Year

Marvin Manzanero

If you are frustrated by all the new regulations being introduced including social distancing and other precautionary measures, you might want to buckle down and hang in there. Today during the Ask the Experts online session, Doctor Manzanero says that it is very likely that we’ll have to get used to some of these measures, perhaps for as long as a year or so. He explains that life may not go back to normal for a while – perhaps until a vaccine is available. Here’s how he explained to one viewer who wanted to know for how long the measures will be around.

Dr. Marvin Manzanero, Director of Health Services

“The current lockdown, I know is going to be until the end of next week or until the end of the month and that is just for us to get a grasp of the total number of cases. I don’t know that we will have an immediate reopening recommendation from our end and even if there is, you will understand that life will not be the norm. Whatever we had as the norm is not going to be the norm as we move along. More than likely all the little lines that we have to make when we go the supermarket or to go anywhere, those will have to continue to remain because COVID-19 is here to stay. So, even if our curve flattens and starts to decrease, once everything goes to be back more or less where we were, those elements of social distancing are going to remain – I don’t see that those are going to go away until we find a cure or if there is an effective vaccine for COVID-19. You will look at the literature talking about minimum twelve months and at maximum eighteen months at establishing new norms of where we are going to go.”
