Returnees Had to Get Health Inspection Clearance

While some of the returnees were from Belize City, a number were from the districts and lived on the island to earn their living. But with suspended bus runs and a state of emergency in place, there was concern that they would not be able to reach their homes and families. There are many other persons reportedly stranded on the island and are attempting to leave. They too will have to be screened before boarding the water taxi.

Returnee

“All I can say today is that I am free from this sickness and I happy and I blessed and I think god for this opportunity that I can be around my family.”

Reporter

“Talk to us about the health inspection clearance that you went through.”

Returnee

“It’s a screening. They asked a lot of questions and there is a doctor that takes care of that situation there. And then Mister Noble as well was behind this to try and help the people as well to try and get us to come out. That’s why you see Mister Noble’s name on the paper and the people that assist—the doctor and the assistant that is making this possible from the health people.”

Reporter

“You had to pay a fee to come on that vessel correct?”

Returnee

“Yes. The text that I received last night was that I needed to bring my ID and twenty-dollar fee to enter the vessel because it will be leaving at six p.m. today. So that’s the text that I got about five-fifteen in the evening.  San Pedro dah one of the richest place in the country and it is a place for opportunity, for jobs and yo make good stuff and yo feel nice there. And that’s what you miss. But the most part 1 miss is being with my family. So jumping on that boat is like a deliverance, like born over again for me, like a new transformation.  I heard that no bus is running, but I got another information that the bus is running but not on a regular schedule. So if not, I will have to stay here maybe with my family in Belize City somewhere and then  maybe see how I could reach in Corozal to my family.”
