Evidence Points to a Community Spread

Marvin Manzanero

There are now a total of eight Belizeans who tested positive for the virus. And it is expected that the number will increase in the days to come. While the hope is that COVID-19 patients will recover, it is not accurate to say that they would be cured.  The New York Post reported on Tuesday that at least fifty-one patients diagnosed as having fully recovered from the virus in South Korea have tested positive a second time after leaving quarantine. Those who have recovered are still contagious as are persons who are asymptomatic. Health officials here are still trying to determine if there is a case of a community spread.

Dr. Marvin Manzanero, Director of Health Services

“If recovered can someone contract again? We are seeing evidence that that seems to be the case. We have to wait for more evidence to see whether in point in fact is something that happens and how often that can happen and how ore sever the case may be because some are saying that it is more severe in a second but then again it is an evolving information in that regard. Can we now say clearly and definitive that we have a community spread?  Clearly and definitive are very strong words. It seems to indicate so. The mapping exercise that we will complete with patient number eight will guide us to that because it is not also how they became ill. It is the potential of them having infected others and who are the asymptomatic carriers that have not seek or will never seek medical attention. I think that is something that our mapping exercise today for patient number eight will be able to say.”
