Belize Records First COVID-19 Related Death

Dean Barrow

There are seven known cases of COVID 19 now, the first Belizean to die here from the virus is fifty-five-year-old Hubert Pipersburgh; he passed away on Sunday at the isolation unit of the K.H.M.H.  The San Ignacio resident tested positive on Friday, April third. Pipersburgh was experiencing fever, a mild cough and difficulty breathing five days before he was tested and after visiting two medical facilities in San Ignacio. He was then placed in an isolated area within the Western Regional Hospital compound.  Later that evening, his health began to deteriorate quickly. Suffering from respiratory distress and pneumonia, Pipersburgh was then transferred to the isolation unit at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital where his battle against the virus intensified. He took his dying breath on Sunday and following his passing, Prime Minister Dean Barrow issued a sympathy message in which he says that medical staff did everything they could to save patient four.

Prime Minister Dean Barrow

“It is my sad duty to announce the death this afternoon of the fourth patient to be diagnosed in Belize with COVID-19. On behalf of the entire nation, I offer deepest condolences to the wife and family of Hubert Pipersburgh. He was a well-known, indeed renowned, Belizean who served his country both at home and in the diaspora. Mr. Pipersburgh was diagnosed in San Ignacio early on Friday last, and was transferred to the K.H.M.H. that same evening. He was then incubated and appeared stable until today, then he deteriorated sharply. He died despite what I am assured were Herculean efforts on the part of the medical staff to save him.”
