No Boledo or Sunday Lottery Draw for Now

The nightly Boledo and Sunday Lottery Draw are staples in Belizean culture, but along with the thirty-day national state of emergency comes a suspension of all those games of chance which is administered by the Belize Gaming Company whose contract had been recently extended. On Wednesday, it was said that the game would continue but early this morning, the games of chance were suspended.  On Wednesday night, thirty-one was the lucky number drawn at seven p.m., the last public drawing for the next few weeks.  The decision to remove it from the list of essential services was taken by the Ministry of Economic Development as the ministry responsible for lotteries.  Another concern for many is the freedom to exercise in the morning.  While the attorney general initially frowned at the idea, he has since taken a softer approach but only on a trial basis.  Persons will be allowed to go jogging and exercise at morning time, providing they adhere to the social distancing protocols.  Commissioner of Police Chester Williams touched on both issues in an interview with News Five this evening.

“There was some question that was asked in respect to the sale of Boledo, if Boledo is an essential service and we have gone ahead and have now removed Boledo or any gaming from the list.  And so, Boledo is now suspended until after the state of emergency is removed.  Some were also querying about jogging and as I said this morning, there was some discussion in terms of looking on facilitating exercising in the morning time and again, I have heard the AG today in his address say that we have now come to the agreement that exercising to the extent of running, jogging or walking is now permitted between the hours of five a.m. and eight p.m.  And may I make this emphatically clear that no person will be allowed to exercise during the curfew period and when persons are exercising, they must ensure that they maintain social distance between themselves while doing so because if that is not done then you would be acting in violation of the regulations.  Now one of the things that the AG has said to me is that while permission is now being given to exercise in the morning, that we are going to monitor it for this week and see how it works, and if we see that too many persons are coming out to exercise then we might have to put a ban on exercising because at the end of the day what we want to do is to ensure that we minimize the persons who are out on the street at any given time.”
