New Measures Implemented for Public Buses

Earlier this week transport authorities met with the Belize Bus Association and other bus officials to discuss the movement of persons across the country.  Several large operators closed off their operations while others scaled back on their runs because of COVID-19 concerns. That meeting saw the introduction of new measures in response to the interruption in public transportation.  Some of the operators who had taken their buses off the highways have resumed limited service. A release issued on Wednesday noted that buses will only take passengers who are seated, so no standees are allowed. Other provisions have also been made to sanitize the buses and commuters are also being asked to do their part. During today’s ‘Ask the Experts’ live session, Attorney General Michael Peyrefitte summarized the measures.

“People may for better or for worse need to move around in the country. If they have to go to work or choose to go to work, we are limiting the transportation on the buses to the seating capacity of the bus. So, if the bus only seats thirty people or twenty-five people, that is the maximum amount of people who can be on the bus. No standing on the buses. Every bus operator arriving at the terminal must instruct the passengers to disembark and oversee the sanitization of the bus by the personnel on site. Whenever a bus stops at a terminal, everybody must come off even if that is not your last stop. The bus must be sanitized and the people before they get back on have to be sanitized along with new passengers coming on to the bus.”
