Distilleries to Produce Hand Sanitizers

Since the outbreak of COVID-19 worldwide, hand sanitizers and alcohol are virtually non-existent in stores and supermarkets. Washing your hands frequently with soap and water is one of the best ways to fight COVID-19 but if soap is not available, hand sanitizers are the second choice. To satisfy the local demand for hand sanitizers, Minister of Food and Agriculture Godwin Hulse announced on Wednesday that there are local distilleries looking to produce the item.

“I had contact the people in the health department to look at hand sanitizers. There are some distilleries now who are beginning to produce that. I’ve been told that the orange oil is an excellent hand sanitizer. We have several containers in storage. So Belize is sitting fairly pretty in this. What we need to do however is to maintain the workers and the co-supporters in the industries, the women who are cleaning the chicken, who are doing all of this we need to support them. We have an issue with the migrant workers which the Ministry of Labor is working with us on because as you know majority of our workers in citrus and bananas are migrant workers. But overall Belize is sitting pretty. Our small population is helping us with our food supply. The fact that we are on the ground with it and also the fact that because of our small population we are not so jammed up I think will help us to get through this crisis.”
