D.H.S. Updates on COVID-19 Prep

Marvin Manzanero

The panelists during the webcast, D.H.S. Doctor Marvin Manzanero and the Minister of Health Pablo Marin, also spoke on a number of other issues raised by viewers. Doctor Manzanero touched on the topic of home isolation, as well as the issue of ventilators; while Marin spoke about the concerns related to health workers.

Dr. Marvin Manzanero, Director of Health Services

“If we look at the Central American region, in neighboring Mexico, almost all cases are being managed from home because they are not severely ill that they are required to be inside a hospital. So, once we have indentified that you have COVID-19 and you are ill, you should stay home. We are now looking at the possibility – we have set aside different quarantine areas. I believe one has been activated in Belize City for high risk people who are coming off the plane today so that they would be staying there under quarantine. So, you are basically going to be observing people for the next two weeks even if they have no signs or symptoms simply because of the high risk from which they are coming from.   Can you say how many ventilators the country has? Karl Huesner has ten and we are scheduled to buy nine more. We have gotten offers from private sector, in terms of them loaning out ventilator space and if needs be that we would be able to ventilate patients in the private sector, as well.”

Pablo Marin

Pablo Marin, Minister of Health

“This is one of the questions that our health care providers are asking, to reassure them of protective gears which we do have for them. Also, for a lot of them that they are seeing and which is a reality whenever they are in health facilities, they are afraid of taking any kind of disease or the virus to their home. So, we are having facilities for them to stay and also they were mentioning what happens to their family members and their medical bills. I can say that the Ministry and the government will take care of them because we know that they are in a high risk situation.”
