Belize Remains Free of Covid-19; New Measures Announced

As the weekend gets underway, there are zero cases of coronavirus detected within our borders but new measures are being put in place beginning this Saturday.  The Oversight Committee on COVID -9 met today and coming out of that high level meeting a number of decisions were taken to minimize any risk of the virus. At midnight on Saturday, the northern border will be closed for travelling followed by the closure of the Philip Goldson International Airport on Monday. The closures, however, do not apply to cargo. In respect of social distancing, gatherings are now limited to twenty-five persons. Here is News Five’s Hipolito Novelo with more details.

Belize remains free of the deadly COVID-19 disease. In fact, Belize is the only mainland nation in the Americas without a confirmed case of the novel coronavirus. Hundreds of millions of people continue to suffer the devastating effects, Belize a tiny nation of fewer than four hundred persons, is taking necessary preventative measures.  The COVID-19 National Oversight Committee met today and to reduce the threat of transmission the Committee took several decisions. First, as of midnight on Saturday, the northern border of Belize, which includes the Corozal Free Zone, will be closed for traveling unless it is an emergency. It will remain open for cargo. Belizeans will be allowed to return to the country but will be inspected and possibly quarantined for fourteen days.  The Philip Goldson International Airport will be closed after the last scheduled flight departs on Monday. The committee stresses that the movement of cargo trucks and planes is not being restricted.  As for social gatherings, the limit will be twenty-five. Social gatherings include wakes, funerals, weddings, and other social events. This limit, however, does not apply to places of employment as it is expected that employers have put in place business protocols for social distancing and continuity of business. These restrictions will remain in place for thirty days after which it will be reviewed.  Reporting for News Five, I am Hipolito Novelo.
