COVID-19 Tips

Tonight we bring you more information on how to prepare and protect yourself in light of the novel corona virus. Earlier this week we spoke with critical care doctor and internist Doctor Jorge Hidalgo who shared his knowledge about the disease. He tells us more about what you can do if you use public transportation and what to do if you live in remote areas.

“Since we are still working, also for people that commute everyday to work and they are basically in buses, they need to have an extra precaution for self protection – especially if someone is coughing. The person that is coughing, then they need to use a mask. If they are not coughing, then you don’t need. But these persons who are coughing need to wear a mask to prevention dissemination of droplets that eventually can make somebody sick. But the surfaces that essentially we can get the contamination, we need to make sure those are clean. In the remote, rural areas, we have to emphasize to them to get prepared in advance with supplies, specifically. And to also have the numbers to call the health facilities if someone gets sick at home. Of course, if someone gets sick at home, actually what we recommend is to try and practice the self isolation. If it is possible, and this is not always the case, is to try and use one bathroom in trying to prevent the sharing of utensils that we use for food and meals. Trying to essentially be in self-quarantine and get in touch with the health provider for guidance.  We still don’t have a positive case, but essentially the virus is knocking on our doors. At any point in time, hopefully it is not the case, we will have the condition. And then all of us hope that we do not have to face a serious problem like other countries, but it could be. We need to take it seriously as it is. We can see examples like Italy which is an example of what happened and they started late in preparation and caused a situation where the health system is overwhelmed.”
