K.H.M.H.’s C.E.O. on COVID-19 Preparedness

Michelle Cox-Hoare

The Ministry of Health has been preparing for COVID-19 since January of this year when the first cases were being reported in China.  It has acquired additional testing kits and has ramped up testing.  So what happens when a case is identified in Belize?  It all depends on where the case is determined.  That person will be placed in an isolation unit in one of the country’s health facilities. The Ministry of Health has enhanced the regional hospitals to house their own isolation units so as not to overwhelm the K.H.M.H.

Michelle Cox-Hoare, C.E.O., K.H.M.H.

“The country needs to understand that the Central Health Region, K.H.M.H. serves as the secondary care facility for the Central Health region. So there is no other hospital under the Ministry of Health for Central health except K.H.M.H. The Ministry of Health has enhanced the responsiveness of the regional facilities so that they will be able to manage a little more. So they would now have to look at how you classify isolation. Not everybody that requires isolation needs to be in the hospital. So those types of classification will be very clear and complied with so that we don’t just keep those numbers very tight for patients that need hospitalization, and the region now has heightened their responsiveness to be able to accommodate that.”
