Half of B.T.B. Staff to be Terminated; Lands Department Closing Offices

Aside from cancelations of events and activities, a number of government departments have been downsizing. News Five has confirmed that this afternoon the Director of the Belize Tourism Board met with staff around three p.m. and shared that about fifty percent of them will be terminated. The cut, we are told, will take place on Friday, when the process will be finalized. While it is not known who will be affected by the downsizing, it is suspected that those who work directly with cruise ship industry as well as those who collect taxes will be first on the list to be given their walking papers.

The Belize Cancer Society also announced today that it is postponing the annual cancer walk, which was scheduled for May thirtieth this year, in light of the COVID-19 threat.

One of the government ministries is closing its offices indefinitely. Late this evening the Ministry of Natural Resources issued a press statement in which it said that all officers countrywide will be close to the public on Friday, March twentieth. The Ministry will issue a notice to inform when offices will reopen. The Ministry says that Heads of Departments and Sections will only attend to public appointments.

Public Transportation is also making adjustments. The public is advised to report over-crowding of public transportation, including buses, busitos, “dalla” vans, taxis, and water taxis.   Daily commuters are encouraged to take alternative buses in the morning and evening to avoid travel during rush hours and employers are encouraged to be flexible with working hours. Commuters are also required to board and exit buses in an orderly fashion.
