Bail Applications to be Heard Via Video Link

It has been established that the arraignment of persons for criminal acts continues as normal, even as a secondary procedure will be instituted at the courts for civil and criminal matters. Executive Committee Member of the Bar Association, Gavin Courtenay says that through the use of technology, bail applications will be heard via video link. Adjournments of trials will limit the transportation of remanded persons to and from the central prison as well.

“As far as the criminal court is concerned, some of the things we are already looking at are having things like bail applications being heard via video link. There is a video link system at the prison, so they hope to maximise the use of that. As far as persons who are committed for trial, they would still have to be present on trial days, but if for whatever reason, there has to be an adjournment of the proceedings, then the prisoners won’t have to be coming to court on that day for the adjournment. Insofar as any other proceedings that can be done over video link or through written submissions rather than oral submissions by the attorneys; that’s being emphasized both in the civil and the criminal court.”
