New Bills Introduced in the House of Representatives

Several pieces of proposed legislation were introduced in parliament today, notwithstanding the primary focus of the sitting being an aborted budget debate.  Before we get to those bills, the Prime Minister announced that all government ministers have decided to forego a month’s salary to be contributed towards funds to combat the COVID-19 threat.  Prime Minister Dean Barrow, for his part, has offered to donate his salary to the fund for the remainder of the coronavirus crisis.  Meanwhile, this morning, in light of what is currently taking place, a bill was introduced to increase the maturity of treasury notes by an additional ten years, likewise an approval for an additional two million dollars in revenue and expenditure to expire at the end of the 2020 fiscal year.

“Madame Speaker, I move the second reading of a bill for an act to amend the Treasury Bills Act Chapter Three of the Substantive Laws of Belize, Revised Edition 2011 to increase the maturity of treasury notes from ten years to twenty years and to provide for matters connected therewith or incidental thereto. Madame Speaker, I move be it resolved that this honorable house approve the estimate of two million, three hundred and eighty-five thousand and eighty-nine dollars from the official charities fund as detailed in Appendix A of the draft estimates of Revenue and Expenditure for the year ending March 31st, 2021.”
