B&B Employees and Two Others Shot in Deadly Encounter

Derrick King

In the face of an imminent threat from the coronavirus, a crime wave is sweeping across the city. There is word tonight that B.D.F. soldiers will be deployed to the streets of the Old Capital to stem the violence. The past forty-eight hours have been one of the deadliest; seven persons have been murdered, including two children, and nine others injured in the spate of relentless gun violence that has transformed the city into a war zone. The latest victim is twenty-one-year old Derrick King, a delivery man of Bowen and Bowen, who was on duty.  Three others were injured in a spray of bullets on West Street around three o’clock this afternoon. King expired on the spot and the others, including a woman, were transported to the hospital for treatment. News Five’s Isani Cayetano reports.

The unabated bloodbath that continues to wash the streets of Belize City has claimed multiple lives since last Friday.  The latest victim was shot and killed this afternoon near the intersections of Orange and West streets.  Ironically, it is the same location where our News Five colleague Steven Ferguson was also injured on Sunday night.  At around three p.m., a pair of deliverymen employed with Bowen & Bowen Ltd. came under gunfire as they went about their job making deliveries.  Twenty-one-year-old Derrick King and twenty-year-old Haywood Brown were reportedly caught in the crossfire during a shootout in the area.  Also injured during the deadly spray of bullets were thirty-eight-year-old Clifford Oliver and forty-eight-year-old Francine Wade.  It is not clear who the intended target of the fatal attack was, however, we can confirm that King succumbed to injuries he received during the incident.  Wade, a Belize City housewife was caught in the right foot, while Oliver was injured in the left leg just above the knee.  King’s co-worker, a resident of Lakeview Street, was shot in the back of the left shoulder.  In a statement issued by B&B following the homicide, the beverage company informs that there were no signs of an attempted robbery of the delivery truck.  We note that deliveries are often escorted by a police officer on motorcycle.  A motive for the armed assault has not be ascertained and a criminal investigation is underway.  On Sunday night, around eight o’clock, Ferguson also came under attack outside of his residence at the corners of Orange and West, as he sat inside his vehicle.  Three shots were fired into the SUV.  Fortunately, Ferguson was able to escape grave injury.
