Two “Economic Czars” to Assist with B.T.B.’s Financial Aid

As part of its bipartisan approach in tackling the COVID-19 threat, the government and the opposition have each chosen a financial expert to oversee the expenditure of some seventy-five million dollars in relief.  Senator Dr. Carla Barnett, who is presently the Minister of State for Labour, is government’s choice, while attorney Christopher Coye, who is also touted as a finance whiz, will represent the People’s United Party.  Both czars, as they are referred to by the prime minister, will be working closely with the Belize Tourism Board in assisting with financial support.

Prime Minister Dean Barrow

“The Leader of the Opposition and I have each agreed to appoint an economic czar, each of us will appoint an economic czar.  We have already decided that our czar will be the good Dr. Carla Barnett who you would think already has enough on her plate with all the labor matters.  But as you know, she has a tremendous amount of experience with the international agencies.  The leader is saying that Mr. Chris Coye who is a financial and legal wizard actually, I give him that, will be his economic czar.  They will draw on other resources as the need arises, but they will be working in the first instance particularly with the Belize Tourism Board because, as just for an example, with the suspension in cruise ship calls on Belize we agree that there have been those tour guides who have been out of work since Friday and certainly they must be a first priority.  I believe there is a register of such persons, but the mechanics and the logistics will be for Carla and Chris and whoever they use to assist them to work out with the Belize Tourism Board.”
