Sporting Events Postponed Due to COVID-19 Threat

Earl Jones

The National Sports Council is indefinitely suspending all activities countrywide amidst the threat of COVID-19.  A release from the council says that while the sporting activities and workshops worked in favour of bettering youth athletes, the health and safety of the population is a priority.  The Football Federation of Belize is also postponing all tournaments.  General Secretary Earl Jones says that to limit social gatherings numbers, the F.F.B. is exercising due prudence by postponing with immediate effect all ongoing tournaments until further notice.

Earl Jones, Gen. Sec., F.F.B.

“It is a very unprecedented move. It was one that was brought about because of the scare of the coronavirus and we don’t want to jeopardize our players and other citizens of this country lives. We want to work with the authorities to curtail the spread of this virus as best as possible. So to be prudent we decided that we will just postpone everything so that people can stay away, social distancing and remain at home so no longer continue to intermingle and prevent the spread of the virus. We don’t have a test yet, no reported case as yet I must say but we must take the necessary precautions. This for us was not an easy decision but nevertheless we have to go along with the authorities and so be guided by them. Nevertheless it does create an economic impact on the operations.”
