No $#!t, Consumers are also Hoarding Toilet Paper

Along with an unwarranted price hike in the cost of sanitizers, is a tendency for consumers to stack up on large quantities of toilet tissue.  That trend has become evident and is driving up demand for toilet paper.  While prices are currently unregulated, there is concern that should COVID-19 be confirmed in Belize, the cost of toilet paper will also skyrocket.  According to the Bureau of Standards, directives will be taken from the Ministry of Trade and Commerce once it is determined that the average prices of toilet tissue have gone up considerably in these times.

Jose Trejo, Director, Bureau of Standards

“We’re experiencing the same hording mentality with respect to the purchasing of not only hand sanitizers and cleaners but also toilet paper.  The law does not extend to that particular item and we will take our instructions from the ministry and cabinet if so be it that we need to amend the law to include other items to stop that or to at least prevent that.  That we know, there is no price hike that I know of in terms of toilet paper.  But there is a pull and demand for toilet paper, as well as other items.”

Isani Cayetano

“Have you considered that should there be an outbreak of coronavirus in Belize, that if you look at that particular trend, that it may very well be the same issue here where there’s already a demand on toilet paper and demand drives supply?”

Prime Minister Dean Barrow

“Sir, but what are you talking about, hording or price gouging, which one?”

Isani Cayetano

“Price gouging, at this point there isn’t an issue with it but it’s foreseeable that along with hand sanitizers, the cost of it may very well be jacked up as well.”

Prime Minister Dean Barrow

“Okay, well let’s bear that one in mind and if that wasn’t added to the price control list it’s something we have to look at.”

John Briceño, Leader of the Opposition

“But there’s no reasonable explanation why people are hording toilet paper, it has nothing to do with the virus.  People just di panic over nothing.  They really have no need to hoard toilet paper.”
