Bipartisanship and Unity in Fighting COVID-19

Dean Barrow

The prospective funds set aside for addressing the national issue of the coronavirus crisis is in the vicinity of seventy-five million dollars, all loans and grants put together. As you have heard, all hands are on deck and the Opposition Leader John Briceño is co-chair of the National Oversight Committee. Both Briceño and the P.M. Barrow say the collaborative effort is geared at protecting the health and well-being of Belizeans and to minimize the threat of the virus spreading in the country.

Prime Minister Dean Barrow

“The Leader of the Opposition, I think, has tatted up where we are, we‘re at like fifty-five million.  That would take us to seventy-five million dollars and then there is one more possibility from the IDB.  The bank‘s sort of lending program for this particular period has not all been drawn down on and they are thinking that their board could possibly approve that some of the money can be used to help countries dealing with this COVID-19 problem. I want to thank the Leader of the Opposition, thank the People‘s United Party for agreeing to come together with us to deal with what we dare say is the greatest crisis this country has faced in a generation.  Perhaps I should say my generation which is a little longer extending backward than some of you…  For me, certainly I think, Mr. Leader, this is one of the most frightening, most troubling of crises that we have faced.  Maybe I could just say in a couple of generations.  So sir, I salute you, I salute your party and it is a matter of the greatest satisfaction to me that we are coming together to show the Belizean people that in times of difficulty we are one.  Thank you very much indeed.”
