K.H.M.H.A. Workers Union Considering Strike Action

Andrew Baird

Union members have expressed several concerns to the hospital’s management, including the provision of the protective gear.  According to Baird and Alpuche-Blake, both parties remain in a stalemate regarding several issues.  The union has considered filing a twenty-one-day notice of strike. That decision will be made final after a meeting with union members is had.

“At this time we have not called off any of our actins until we see the PAHO report and we see the actual plan of the K.H.M.H. which all will be revealed in the meeting this evening. It is our membership and staff who has directed us in regards to that demonstration. So when we have that meeting based on that we see in the reports and the plan of action for COVID-19 from Karl Heusner then we will be able to bring that information back to the staff and we will be guided there and then.”

“So is there still that considered to file that twenty-one days notice to strike?”

“We take our guide from our membership. We are going to now sit down. The Labor Minister Dr. Carla Barnet and the Labour Commissioner sat in the meeting as mediators. They have instructed us to come back. We review together all parties the PAHO report, the COVID-19 plan for Karl Heusner and then we take it back to our membership and our membership and then the membership decides our next move.”

In a release, the Belize National Teachers Union has expressed solidarity with the K.H.M.H. union and is asking its members to join the demonstration on Tuesday.
