N.T.U.C.B. Takes its Seat on COVID-19 Taskforce

Marvin Mora

The National Trade Union Congress of Belize, as a social partner, has a seat on the COVID-19 Taskforce, which has been established by government.  Prime Minister Barrow, at a press conference on Thursday, said that the umbrella organization was yet to submit the names of its representatives.  Earlier today, News Five caught up with N.T.U.C.B. President Marvin Mora who said that its representatives on the taskforce are both doctors, who are part of the Public Service Union.  He also says that the N.T.U.C.B. is equally concerned about the well-being of its frontline employees in the public service.

Marvin Mora, President, N.T.U.C.B.

“There has been two names that have been mentioned.  Obviously we‘ll probably need more alternates, but two names have been mentioned and would be Dr. Ingrid Sansores who would be representing the congress as a member of the Public Service Union.  And also, there is one of our brothers, he‘s also public service.  He also works in the medical field and his name is Kevin Dawson.  So those are our two persons.  I think that the official letter for the N.T.U.C.B. has not gone out yet but would probably go out today.”

“Have you guys as an organization met to discuss the potential impact of coronavirus on the membership of the N.T.U.C.B.?”

Marvin Mora

“Yes, of course.  For us as a trade union and an umbrella organization, the biggest concern that we have is the potential risk of loss of life for those people who actually have to deal with customers or, you know, on a daily basis, on a face to face type of scenario.  So for us, those are the people, the frontline people, the doctors, the nurses, the policemen, the customer service people.  People who have to be out there in the field again, having that close communication with other persons.  So for us, definitely we have had that discussion and we‘ve tried all our best to mobilize as well in sync with what is happening because the Government of Belize made that call and we are answering that call as well.”
